Position Summary

Casella is seeking a motivated Senior Tax Accountant to join our Corporate Tax team. This is an exciting opportunity to work with complex tax issues which have high visibility to senior management The Senior Tax Accountant for Indirect Tax reports to the Indirect Tax Manager. The individual will work with the Indirect Tax Manager in researching and analyzing a wide range of tax issues and tax implications for both the US and Canada, will aid in managing workflow and general compliance related to sales and use taxes, heavy vehicle and excise taxes. Will also prepare other miscellaneous workpapers and returns as needed. The individual will work in a collaborative manor with Staff Tax Accountants, with our outside tax consultants in any tax filings, perform certain monthly account reconciliations, and assist in the implementation of process improvements. The individual will work in the Rutland, VT office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and tax laws and regulations in relevant state, local and federal jurisdictions
  • Assists the Indirect Tax Manager in performing research on relevant tax questions and issues as they arise.
  • Aids in compliance and reporting obligations for indirect tax types overseen by the Tax Department including state and local sales tax, highway use tax and federal excise taxes related to heavy trucks.
  • Communicates with departments across the company to obtain necessary documentation for tax purposes.
  • Analyzes and reconciles tax accrual accounts.
  • Responds to communication from regulatory agencies.
  • Detail-oriented and strong organizational skills, an ability to multi-task and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Participates in training and other learning opportunities to expand knowledge of tax matters and the Company, and performs any other duties needed to help drive our vision, fulfill our mission, and/or abide by our core values.
  • Aids with other miscellaneous returns and special tax projects as assigned.

Education, Experience & Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a self-starter with a strong work ethic, have an Associate’s Degree in Accounting or a Finance/Business related degree and 5+ years of relevant tax experience or equivalent combination of education and experience Not required but preferred experience in industry accounting or corporate tax role, Experience with tax research tools and Excel power user. The incumbent must have a demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team-based environment.

 

A solid understanding of general accounting rules, detail-oriented and strong organizing skills, strong follow through skills, and an ability to multi-task and meet consistent deadlines are required. Excellent listening and communication skills, an ability to adapt to change and be adept at identifying issues and formulating solutions are necessary.  Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and a customer service approach to working with internal departments and outside customers are expected.

 

Although not required, a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or other Finance/Business related degree is preferred.  Must be legally able to work in the US and be in office, located in Rutland, VT.
