Position Summary

The Field Service Technician is responsible for the installation, trouble shooting, updating and expertise of On-Board Computing Systems (OBC). The incumbent will travel to multiple facilities across Casella’s operating footprint to service and install OBC’s throughout Casella’s fleet.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts the installation and service of ELD/GPS/AOBRD and fleet management equipment into various types of vehicles.
  • Understands vehicle installation practices pertaining to Electrical Systems and Mechanical knowledge, with the ability to answer questions of others.
  • Disassembles interior/exterior panels on commercial-type vehicles including the dashboard and panels found in various locations which can also include the engine compartment.
  • Installs, configures, and troubleshoots hardware and/or software solutions supporting critical business functions and customer-facing services.
  • Performs all functions relating to the receipt, inventory, storage, tracking, repair, disposal, and reporting of Information Technology assets utilized throughout the fleet.
  • Preschedules service and proactively contacts maintenance and operation teams at each location when they are due for service and prior to holidays.
  • Executes training programs for maintenance and operations teams on troubleshooting and configuration of the OBC system.
  • Participates in training and other learning opportunities to expand knowledge of the company, products, sales, and services and performs any other duties needed to help drive our vision, fulfill our mission, and/or abide by our core values.

Career Path Definition & Distinctions
Level 1: 1–3 years of progressively responsible experience in the installation and support of fleet management systems. Demonstrated knowledge of ELD, GPS, and AOBRD technologies, with hands-on experience accessing vehicle electrical systems and performing basic troubleshooting of hardware and software. Proven ability to follow safety protocols and maintain detailed service records. Familiar with mobile electronics installation and automotive electrical systems. Proficient in Office 365 and effective in both communication and problem-solving. Actively developing expertise in onboard computer (OBC) systems and inventory tracking processes, while gaining exposure to a variety of commercial vehicle types.
Level 2: 3–5 years of progressively complex experience in fleet technology installation and support. Demonstrated expertise in vehicle electrical systems and diagnostics, with a strong track record of resolving escalated technical issues and leading complex installations. Skilled in training maintenance and operations teams on OBC troubleshooting and coordinating service schedules across multiple facilities. Experienced in managing IT asset tracking, repair, and reporting processes. Works collaboratively to support cross-functional teams and contributes to continuous improvement by providing feedback on procedures. Contributes to developing and implementing action plans to support project initiatives.
Level 3: 5+ years of progressively advanced experience in fleet technology leadership and strategic support. Demonstrated expertise in overseeing regional and company-wide OBC installation projects, with a strong background in vehicle electronics and system integration. Proven ability to develop and deliver formal training programs, serve as a technical advisor during hardware and software rollouts, and analyze service data to drive continuous improvement. Collaborates effectively with IT, Fleet, and Operations leadership on cross-functional initiatives. Recognized for strong problem-solving and communication skills, and the ability to teach and mentor others. Actively influencing technology adoption and fleet modernization strategies. Capable of developing and implementing action plans, while expanding project coordination capabilities.

Education, Experience & Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a High School Diploma or equivalent and a demonstrated ability to install and troubleshoot computers and electronics. A valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, an ability and willingness to travel throughout the company footprint 75% of the time with overnight travel, and possession of necessary installation tools are essential.

 

Effective listening and problem-solving skills, discipline when developing and executing action plans, ability to identify and develop training opportunities, strong understanding of automotive electrical systems and demonstrated proficiency with MS Office 365 applications are required.

 

Although not required, a degree in Information Technology, Computer Information Systems or other related field, relevant computer and automotive certifications, 1-2 years in commercial vehicle maintenance or electronic installation experience and background knowledge or interest in electronic installation and maintenance are preferred.
