Position Summary

The Accounts Payable Manager oversees daily corporate accounts payable activities to ensure timely processing of vendor invoices or other disbursement requests, manages the retention of proper documentation, and ensures adherence to company policies and procedures. The Accounts Payable Manager provides overall direction and guidance to the accounts payable staff to ensure that the general ledger is well-maintained, and that invoices or disbursement requests are processed and paid in the proper accounting period. The Accounts Payable Manager drives ongoing efficiency through participation in financial system optimization projects comprised of interdepartmental teams across the Casella Waste Systems organization

 

Hiring Range: From $75,000 - $85,000 annually.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversees a team of Accounts Payable Specialists by handling personnel matters, allocating workloads, and providing guidance and training on both accounting systems and corporate initiatives.
  • Participates in the process of reviewing and interviewing applicants as well as the selection, onboarding, and training of new employees to ensure a thorough understanding of the operational components of Casella Waste Systems and ensuring efficiency and value in the accounts payable process.
  • Analyzes complex transactions to ensure accurate accounting and provide guidance to field accounting personnel, as necessary.
  • Manages the check run process to ensure invoices or other disbursement requests are paid in a timely and accurate manner, including advancing initiatives to assist in eliminating paper check payments, minimizing risk of fraud or payment interception.
  • Collaborates with various departments throughout the company for support on various systems, invoice verifications, approvals, and customer refunds and works closely with Casella Waste Systems procurement to maintain effective vendor relations.
  • Communicates both internally and externally to resolve issues presented by the organization’s vendors and regional teams or as a result of process change and oversees all year-end accounts payable audit requests and the annual IRS 1099 processing.
  • Travels to newly acquired locations within the operating footprint to lead and coordinate the integration of vendors into the organization’s systems and to educate new employees about the accounts payable process to create alignment and successful integration.
  • Manages and provides leadership to team members through effective communication, establishing clear goals and objectives, coaching team members on goal achievement, and ensuring access to training and development opportunities that assist employees in attaining the necessary skills to achieve desired team and organizational results.
  • Participates in training and other learning opportunities to expand knowledge of the organization’s products, sales, and services, and performs other applicable duties necessary to help drive the organizations vision and to fulfill its mission, in line with its core values.
  • Ensures compliance with all organization, state and federal policies, regulations, and laws regarding employment and employee safety.

Education, Experience & Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or equivalent years of experience, 6+ years of experience in an accounting related role, 6+ years of leadership experience and a demonstrated ability to work as part of a team in a collaborative environment. Occasional travel to division locations within the company footprint and an ability to work with specific monthly timelines related to accounting cycles are required.

 

Excellent listening, verbal and written communication, analytical, problem-solving, and formal presentation skills are essential. A general understanding of US GAAP, demonstrated proficiency with MS Office 365 and accounting systems and an ability to work in a fast paced digital environment are necessary. Experience with NetSuite and Coupa are beneficial but not required.

 

Although not required, an Advanced Degree or certificate in management are preferred.
